There’s nothing quite like the warmth and pure comfort of flannelette. Our Head Designer, Mark Travers, explains the making of our newest flannel collection, updated for the season with a stylish twist.

Sheridan flannel, with its generous 190 GSM of 100% cottontoddler pillow cases, is unique purely because it is developed to such high quality standards. It passes all testing for shrinkage, pilling and colour-fastness, and most importantly for the winter months, it can be tumble dried.

In the depth of long winter evenings, there is an understandable apprehension to slipping in-between cold, plain cotton sheets. The main benefit of sleeping in flannel is its immediate warm welcome into bed. The soft, brushed cotton surface of flannel makes cocooning yourself a comforting reality.

Our challenge this season was to update this traditional, practical product to make it more desirable and relevant for the modern interior. We achieved this by incorporating marl, a key textile fashion trend and using it to create a more appealing, contemporary flannel bed.

The marl finish is created by weaving the twisted two or three colour yarn into a square weave fabric. Fine steel brushes are then used to brush and break some of the outer surface fibres to create that signature flannel softness.

Delaware, our newest flannelette sheet, is available in two complementary shades of grey, a lighter grey marl or a deep charcoal. Opt for the Delaware Sheet Set for a boost of winter warmth on the bed, or layer your flannel bedding with the reversible two-toned Delaware Quilt Cover for optimum warmth and a contemporary finish.

To update your bedding for the cooler months, contrast the softly textured surface of flannel with cosy, winter weight accessories. Add texture and warmth with a chunky knitted throw like Carlin or Hennings tossed nonchalantly across the bed. Pair with the matching Carlin Cushion or add interest with a contrasting fabric. The fluffy Mongolian lambswool of theBlighCushionor the oversize basket weave design ofWeaverswill add a beautiful textural finish to the bed.

The only rule here when combining texture and tone is to have a little fun with it. Layering with this superb new fabric will allow you to create your ultimate winter bed – not only stylish, but perfect for keeping out the chill while you sleep and dream, warmly cocooned in flannel.
